Girls Surf Sessions
Growing up, I was often the only girl in the water. I allowed this to shape my experience, so I either tried to blend in or prove I belonged. But I really wanted to find a space where I did not feel I had to do either, so I began creating a crew of girl surfers. Over time, these girls have helped me feel that I can surf where I want, speak up, and take waves without feeling like I was using up some invisible allowance of acceptance.
I want the next generation to grow up with this community. Surfing is slowly changing to become more inclusive to girls, and I want younger generations to fall in love with surfing in the kind of environment I wish I had. Moonbeam helps organize girls surf sessions, where both experienced surfers and beginners can participate.
Outreach
We have partnered with Chicama Surf Terapia, who provide surf equipment and instruction to the local kids (ages 5-17) of Chicama, Peru, dubbed the longest left in the world.
Access to surfing. With approximately 100 enrolled in the program and only enough surf equipment for 40, there is a massive need for wetsuits and surfboards for these kids. The profit from our surf camps and fundraising efforts go toward providing this equipment to the local kids of Chicama.
Surfing heals. The president of Chicama Surf Terapia, Maricela Arroyo de la Cruz, stresses the importance of their regular Saturday surf camps. Many of the local kids of Chicama struggle with depression; with heartbreaking stories of youth suicide in their community, surfing has been a powerfully uplifting source of light.
